Rebounding, Pivoting, Adapting, Experimenting

After a year of virtual residencies, rehearsals, and performances, Translations emerges as an Attack Theatre performance experience blending the virtual and the in-person. First, the company invites you to log on May 20th and 21st to our new studios in Lawrenceville for a virtual dance event that takes a year of performances and explorations and blends them into a new live performance series.

Next, the company logs off with a world premiere adaptation of Translations for the stage at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s Open Air Series on May 28th at 3pm.

From screen to stage

May 20 & 21 | 7:30pm (EST) | Online

In Translations, we explore ideas that were generated and captured in a two-dimensional digital landscape with renewed abandon and spaciousness. Derived from a multi-faceted investigation of a year of pandemic creations, this performance offers a behind-the-scenes look at our translation of art from words to movement, artist to artist, and screen to stage.

This virtual event includes a 15-20 minute live performance, a Q&A with the artists, and an opportunity for audiences to engage directly with the concepts we explored in translating screen dance to live performance.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

American Sign Language interpretation will be available for both virtual programs.

From Studio to Open Air

May 28 | 3:00pm (EST) | Flagstaff Hill at Schenley Park

We then take this performance to Flagstaff Hill for the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's Open Air: A Series in Celebration of the Performing Arts. There we join a community of artists sharing work to an outdoor audience; many of us for the first time in over a year. In a live performance, audiences regain an agency not often found in a highly curated, filmed production. Follow one line of movement, hold onto one moment of emotion, take in the park scenery, or enjoy the bigger picture of four dancers moving in concert with one another and with you.

This performance is free and no reservation is required. Socially distanced seating in chairs is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional seating is available on the hillside, personal blankets and chairs are welcome. We ask that you honor guidelines established by the C.D.C. and our partner organizations for participating in this event, including maintaining social distance and wearing a mask. For more information about this event, please review this Frequently Asked Questions page that PBT has created.

From Idea to action

June 2021 | Interactive Video Recording of our Open Air performance

As we enter a new phase of reintegration, we resist the notions of “back to normal.” We’ve spent more than a year creating differently, moving and feeling differently, learning new skills, experimenting and failing and trying again. It is a process that is not done—and should not be left behind. Informed by the screen and the stage, the final translation of this performance to the virtual and interactive platform of Eko marks a commitment to continue refining innovative practices for sharing our work.
